Hold (payment hold)

A deliberate pause on releasing your funds, applied by the platform while an order, an account, or a dispute is reviewed.

A hold is when the platform keeps money it would otherwise release to you. It is not the same thing as a pending balance: pending is the normal settling period every order passes through, while a hold is an exception applied on purpose because something needs checking. A hold can attach to one order or to a whole account.

The reasons are the ordinary risk-control ones you would expect from any marketplace that pays sellers before the buyer has the item in hand: a brand-new seller with no track record, an unusually large or unusual order, a shipment whose tracking never scans, or an open dispute on a specific sale. The cure is nearly always the same, which is to give the platform the evidence it is waiting for and to ship promptly with tracking that moves.

When holds apply, how long they last and what lifts them are Whatnot policy and subject to change, so check Whatnot's current seller documentation rather than relying on what another seller experienced last year. The useful habit is to plan for the possibility instead of being surprised by it: a seller whose entire restocking budget is last night's sales is one hold away from a stalled week.
